Remix Culture 1
Our assignment for the 2nd week of class is generating concepts by mashing up two or more objects found on Thingiverse. This assignment of mashing up objects was called Remix Culture. From what I understood, remix culture is when you get ideas from other creators to make a new idea.
I had a blast remixing different designs made by other artists that I even did the rest of the assignment at home and downloaded Rhinoceros 6 in my laptop. Before I started doing the assignment, I snooped around Thingiverse to get some ideas and listed them on my notebook:
I had a blast remixing different designs made by other artists that I even did the rest of the assignment at home and downloaded Rhinoceros 6 in my laptop. Before I started doing the assignment, I snooped around Thingiverse to get some ideas and listed them on my notebook:
- Dragonfly + Bunny
- Honeycomb + Heart Lamp + Bee Wings
- Circle Pendant + Eye ball
Glasses + Honeycomb- Crown + Devil Horns (2 versions)
- Crown + Angel Wings
- Candle Holder + Crystals (2 versions)
- Clock + Honeycomb + Clock Hands
Dragon Head + Dragon Claws- Sun + Wings + Venus Statue
The ideas I have on red were scratched out for two reasons; only one creature is allowed for this assignment and some files were too big or too complicated for a beginner like me to experiment with.
The first concept I did was the Dragonfly and Bunny remix. Back in high school, my English teacher gave us an assignment about spirit animals that we think we have. The bunny symbolizes my past because I was very shy and vulnerable to the world especially when I was not allowed to go outside by myself, caged at home like a pet. The dragonfly, however, signifies the person who I want to be. Accepting change and embracing it as positive and freeing. The two of them together symbolizes my personality. Yes, I am still shy but I am willing to change.
Next concept is about loving the bees. I found a model for a heart lamp and I thought that a honeycomb pattern would look nice on it. I wanted it to show that people need to take care of bees because they are important to our planet. The wings are my favorite part of this concept. I used a bee design but took off the rest of the parts I did not need in Rhinoceros 6.
Jewelry always fascinated me and this is why I chose this concept. I stumble upon a pendant model in Thingiverse and I thought something was missing to it for my taste. So I looked up different models of eyeballs and cam across with the Millennium Eye. The model suddenly gave me nostalgia because it was the Millennium Eye from an anime catlled Yu-gi-oh!. I used to watch it back then with my friends when I was younger. Combining these two models together was easy because they go really well together.

Last year, during the 2018 Met gala, the theme was Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. One of my favorite musicians, Lana del Rey, wore a beautiful head dress that inspired me to create the next remix concept.
For this concept, I used Rhinoceros 6 to separate the wings since they come as a single file and I needed to rotate each wing to an angle. I put the wings behind the crown but, as shown in the second photo, it goes through one of the crowns details. This bothered me because I wanted the left wing to rest in between the details of the crown. If I re-arrange it, the piece looks uneven. This crown was also not my favorite choice. The crown I wanted to use was too big and complicated for Tinkercad to import so I chose a different one instead.
Now for this concept, I made two versions of it. The crown is the same as I used in the previous concept but instead of an angelic look, I went for the opposite. The first version, I used a Chamois' horn on the crown. The more I look at it the more it looks like Loki's head dress in the movies and I did not like it. So I changed it into a different one.
The second version, in my opinion, is better. It looks more demonic and it gives of the vibe that I want. At first, I had a hard time arranging the horns because I was not sure of what angle I wanted it to stay. I decided that this angle looks best on this type of crown model so I stuck with it.
I have always loved patterns and textures. In this concept, I combined two textures that might make few people feel uneasy, holes and edges. I used different types of crystal models, one is more circular than the other. Again, the candle holder was not the one I wanted to use since the one I want to use is too big for Tinkercad. Here is the model that I originally intended to use.
Patterns always excite me which is why I used the honeycomb pattern again on this clock model. I added an arm model to complete the look. The hexagon gives the clock a more interesting look. simple but not too boring, however, the color I used sort of gives off that bland aura.

Last but not the least, Venus Concept Model. The inspiration for this came while I was listening to some Vaporwave beats. This microgenre of electronic music is an internet meme at this point and I love it. It usually has Greek statues involved with it and the aesthetic is very purple but for this concept, I made it simple and white. I would like to use this model as a reference for a clay sculpture I am planning to create. I re-used the same wing model as the Angel crown on a Venus statue model and as its halo, I used a sun model.
I know we only needed 10 concepts but I enjoyed this project a lot and made this lil guy.
The inspiration for this lil penguin is from a post I made on Facebook six years ago. It was about cute things with human feet or legs. I find it hilarious.
